Hypnosis FAQ’s

Hypnosis is definitely one of the most misunderstood sciences in the world. It’s mainly due to the misunderstanding of the concept and of course the public perception created by stage and television shows. Below are few myths about hypnosis and hypnotherapy:

When in hypnosis, you can be made to do or say anything against your will:

Stupid news stories, stage hypnotists and Tele-serials and gossips have created the illusion that you lose control in hypnosis. Where you are ready to do anything that the hypnotherapist commands you to do like asking your bank account, personal history, doing crime, removing clothes, etc. In fact, when hypnotized, you are relaxed and focused and able to choose to get up and walk away at any time. You choose to give your attention to the hypnotherapist, and you can withdraw it at any time.

I can’t be hypnotized

The only reason you can’t be hypnotized is if you are incapable of paying attention due to extremely low IQ or brain damage, intoxicated with alcohol or drugs, learning disability, or any mental/neurological conditions. The more flexible the hypnotherapist, the more effective he/she will be able to hypnotize you.

I didn’t feel hypnotized or in trance

There is no such feeling as ‘Hypnosis Feeling’. You are in trance when you relaxing, listening music, watching television, thinking deeply, etc. The only difference is the level of trance achieved varies from person to person and almost everyone can be hypnotized to a deep level, enough to do some kind of therapeutic work.

Can I recall anything that has ever happened to me

Certainly not! Some hypnotherapists use certain specific techniques that may help a client remember certain things from the past if that’s going to be useful for the client. Usually there is no real need to go back into past or personal history.

Hypnosis is dangerous, mystical and black magic

LOL! Few religious people talk of hypnosis as the ‘devils work, black magic’. Remember anything and everything can be used positively and negatively. Everything depends on the therapist’s professionalism and ethics.

Hypnotherapist can implant false suggestions in clients mind

This is NOT true! There is a very general belief that a hypnotherapist can “implant” false suggestions in a client that is not to the benefit of the subject. The hypnotherapist can only “implant” suggestions acceptable and believable to the client for the benefit of the client.

A belief that a hypnotherapist can just snap their fingers and the client will be in a deep sleep, which is not technically correct. Hypnosis is a contract between the client and the hypnotherapist where the hypnotherapist will give the client instructions to follow to ensure the client will experience all the wonders of the unconscious mind like relaxation, pain control, habit change, stress control, etc.
