General FAQ’s

What is the difference between a counselor, a psychotherapist, a psychiatrist and a health coach?

Psychiatrists are qualified doctors, specializing in diagnosing and treating mental illness. They can prescribe psychiatric medication.

Counselors, psychotherapeutic counselors and psychotherapists have training of how to work with a variety of people with a wide range of emotional distress and whose lives may be affected by external factors (for e.g. job loss, bereavement) and internal issues (like low self-esteem, anxiety).

Health Coach is a qualified professional who has a broader understanding of the disease process and the nature of illness, healing and wellbeing by addressing the biological, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental influences that affect the patient’s health. He focuses on the mind, body, spirit, emotions, beliefs, values and social wellbeing that helps patient make the changes in their life. The hallmark of health coaching is working with the “whole person”. Health Coaching is a step-by-step process moving you towards your health and wellness goals.

Please refer to the Therapies tab on the home page.

How do I know what type of therapy my coach will use?

When you meet your coach and discuss the issues, it is likely that they will then choose the type of coaching approach or therapy suited to you. The whole idea is to tailor the sessions to your needs.

Do I have to prepare beforehand for a counselling/coaching session?

No, though it does help to make points on what you want to discuss about in the session.

And also complete the homework given to you.

Is it 100% confidential?

Counselling/Coaching is a confidential form of process and relationship. We will not pass any information about you to anyone else. When you agree for the session there is a contract being signed between the coach and the patient to keep the integrity.

How many sessions will I need?

This can be known only after the first consultation and after knowing the background of the issue you have come with. We believe the patient is the expert, so he/she knows better how many session he/she might need.

What is important to understand is how soon I will be able to resolve my problems rather than thinking how many sessions I will be wanting.

Sometimes 3 sessions, sometimes 6 sessions, sometimes 8 sessions, etc. We do our best that you don’t come to us for more than required sessions unless it’s a chronic disease or addiction issue.

How long does a session last?

The initial session after consultation is always 60 – 90 minutes; the following sessions are about 45 minutes each.

Do you belong to any professional organization?

Yes, we are associated with the following organization.

  • ANLP (India).
  • AAMET, Association for the Advancement of Meridian Energy Techniques.
  • IMMA, International Meta-Medicine Association.
  • IWAISA, International Why am I Sick Association

What is the guarantee that the technique or therapy will work?

We find this question very fascinating. Once a patient told us, any electronic item has 1 year guarantee on them, what guarantee you give for your technique or therapy? Our coach burst out laughing listening to this…

Do you ask the same question to the doctor? What is the guarantee that your medications will work? Does any school take guarantee that you or your kids will get 95% and above only?

Our counselor/coach will never offer to ‘cure’, ‘treat’, ‘heal’ you, because in reality it is the ‘PATIENT’ who can actually cure, treat or heal himself no one else can. Every individual is different and unique, one technique might work for him and one might not. The issues might return again in chronic cases only when the individual has faced another stressors in life, for which he dint know what to do.

I am taking antidepressants or other medications, is it OK to have counselling/coaching as well?

When you attend the first consultation, they will ask you about any existing medical conditions that you may have and also if you are taking any prescribed medication. They may ask you to check with your doctor before you start the session (unless of course your doctor has suggested you for counselling/coaching).

Why do I need a health coach? How can a health coach help me? I’m already taking medication, what difference can a health coach make?

“It’s important to understand that medicines treat the symptoms but not the underlying issue behind the illness”. Optimal wellness can be achieved only by the expertise of the health coach.

For e.g. a patient suffered from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and has been on medication with minimal relief. Now IBS has to do with indigestion, not being able to digest something important (it’s often related to anger and survival). By counselling the health coach found out the underlying issue which was to do with patient being constantly fighting with oneself to come up in life (though being highly educated).  The patient was not able to digest this information (based on his subjective perception). He also went through severe anger and anxiety during this process. Typical symptoms were chronic constipation, bloating of stomach for days and then when something good happened he would get diarrhea and relief from bloating.

This analysis and the following sessions helped him deal with the anxiety, anger and the events that triggered the illness. Now the client has a normal bowel system.

Likewise, there are many examples which we can give you, when you come for a consultation with your queries and issues.
